Rheumatoid arthritis has been considered a chronic condition for which the cause has been unknown to the medical community.
Medical science has had to guess about possible causes, and therefore they've been guessing as to how to treat the huge number of sufferers.
Some have speculated that the disease is caused by a virus or bacteria, but no organism has been found to be the culprit.
So, the medical fallback position has been to say that genetics plays a role, since rheumatoid arthritis seems to run in families.
It's not really surprising that a lot of conditions run in families.
Alcoholism, for example, has been thought to run in families as a result of some genetic weakness. Somewhere in one of the many alternative health books I've read, the author made a remark to the effect that...
of course alcoholism, along with many other conditions, seems to run in families. But more likely than genetics, environmental similarities are responsible. Especially the tendency for families to continue to eat the same faulty diet and adopt the same dangerous habits.
I think I just remembered the source of that statement.
It might be from the Health Ranger site.
Whoever said it, it just seems so obvious.
Nearly all children become comfortable eating the same things their parents ate, and taking on the same habits. For generations, the same eating habits often run in families.
Eating habits aren't the only habits often happening over and over, generation to generation.
Parenting methods, especially the faulty methods, seem to get passed along from one generation to the next. So, the same problems - either to much strictness or too little - or you could say to much permissiveness or too little - tend to be present for generations.
Sometimes one particular scenario develops as a kind of rebellion to parental authority.
Why would anyone think any of these habits or methods happen because of genetics?
Rheumatoid arthritis has only been controlled, not cured by the medical establishment - and really to the exclusive benefit of the medical establishment.
For years all they could do was control the pain. Some of the pain medications are downright dangerous. Especially all the drugs containing acetaminophen.
Prolonged use of acetaminophen results in the destruction of the liver. Kidneys are also likely to be damaged.
Other pain medications also damage vital organs.
Now the standard treatment is to immediately start trying to limit joint damage due to inflammation. That's where the DMARDs come in.
A DMARD is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug. DMARDs were developed by the drug companies as treatments for other diseases - in some cases for cancer.
In addition to the DMARDs, rheumatologists often use biologics along with steroids and NSAIDs.
Lots of alternative health practitioners have been dealing with the root cause of rheumatoid arthritis for decades.
Many naturopaths, holistic doctors, nutrition-based chiropractors and others have realized that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by poor eating habits.
Many sufferers of the condition would probably say no way.
They genuinely believe that they have eaten a healthy diet through most of their lives.
Many people believe the standard American diet to be healthy.
What is not realized is that meat, potatoes, vegetables, breads, cereals and dairy products have become especially unhealthy - even downright poisonous.
Lets start with the most serious or worst culprit.
Wheat is in almost everything.
Most people eat wheat at every meal, and lots of it.
Wheat is in cereals, breads, pastas, pizza, and even in fried chicken. It can be found in many processed foods including soups, desserts, packaged mixes such as Hamburger Helper, meatloafs, salads of various kinds from the deli.
If you're anything like me, you've enjoyed a cold beer or two.
Lots of people have heard of gluten, and have also heard that gluten allergies or sensitivities are a problem for some. But everyone may be allergic to gluten, or one of the other proteins in wheat.
It's just that the reactions on the part of some are more severe than for others.
It's quite possible and even likely that for most of us, our bodies react simply by displaying symptoms which are misdiagnosed by doctors as rheumatoid arthritis or some other condition.
Arthritis is only one of about 200 diseases commonly displaying symptoms similar to those of certain food allergies - especially gluten sensitivities.
Where did I get such an outrageous idea?
Dr. Jame Braly, M.D. and Ron Hoggan, M.A. wrote Dangerous Grains, published in 2002.
Their book focuses on celiac disease as a starting point. They tell us that celiac has been erronesouly considered to be a rare disease affecting about 1 in 4,850 Americans and Canadians.
Improved lab testing methodologies has caused those estimates to be revised to about 40 times more prevalent than previously thought.
In other words, celiac was most frequently diagnosed as something else - probably one of about 200 other diseases showing similar symptoms.
The authors also point out that celiac disease occurs 5 times more frequently among people with rheumatoid arthritis. And, about half of the patients with RA show clear signs of gluten sensitivity.
When celiac is discovered in those with arthritis, pain is either reduced or completely eliminated with those who follow a strict gluten-free diet.
Dangerous Grains makes a very strong case for eliminating celiac and nearly 200 other diseases by eliminating wheat and certain other grains from our diets.
Rheumatoid arthritis is one of those other 200 diseases.
My sister had a serious but brief battle with arthritis of the rheumatoid variety.
It was brief because she stopped eating foods with wheat in them.
Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, author of Eat Right for Your Type was the first author we've read who advocated staying off of wheat for two of the four blood types.
Joyce and I have eaten some sprouted grain breads for several years since being aware of the problems of glutin.
Some other grains also contain glutin. Those are rye, barley, spelt, kamut, and triticale.
Wheat is usually identified as the primary culprit since it is the most consumed grain on the planet.
Wheat or gluten may not be the only cause of arthritis.
Internal acidity is identified by some doctors.
They say acidity corrodes joints.
Whether it's the acidity, the gluten, or other toxins, it seems clear that arthritis is caused by adverse chemical conditions in the body.
The cure is not to add more toxic chemicals in the form of medications.
The real cure is detoxification using a good detox diet, such as the one prescribed by Dr. Alejandro Junger, M.D., or the one prescribed by the late Max Gerson, M.D. and preserved in the book by his daughter, The Gerson Therapy.
Another good possibility is Dr. Paavo Airola's juicing cleanse.
The use of medications prescribed by many if not most medical doctors not only make arthritis worse, they cause other medical problems - very serious problems.
Chronic rheumatoid arthritis may be the reason many seniors find themselves in a state of misery much of the time. If you are among that group, stop eating wheat altogether, and talk to your doctor about getting off the dangerous meds.
If you doctor is not supportive, find a doctor who is. There are more and more medical doctors who are into holistic or functional medicine.
Or, you could find an alternative practitioner.Return to Anti-Aging from Rheumatoid Arthritis
