Mind over matter is a phrase often connected to the supernatural - the strange world of telekinesis and related paranormal events.
I don't know that I believe it possible to move detached physical objects by trying to concentrate brain waves in a highly focused manner.
I've seen videos on YouTube and other places, and I've witnessed live attempts to move objects on a table without physically touching them.
The few times I've seen such attempts in person were not successful - and somehow I doubt the validity of any such attempts.
Call me skeptical.
But events which seem to be distortions of the physical world we know and trust really miss the point of mind power routinely used to directly influence our own physical bodies.
The routine and continuous ability to use your mind power to heal your body, strengthen your immune system, and avoid or minimize pain is the real and powerful purpose of mind over matter.
Most of that power is automatically exercised by our subconscious minds without our even being aware of it.
The incredible nervous systems of our bodies always provide the pathways for rapid chemical and electronic messages from the various cells of our bodies to glands and receptors in the brain, near the brain and elsewhere.
But not only are there messages flowing via nerve fibers, many more are always moving into and out of cells from their surrounding environments.
I've read some more or less technical books on this subject - including Antonio Demasio's The Feeling of What Happens, which is subtitled, Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness.
Maxwell Maltz' well-known book from the 1960's PsychoCybernetics is much easier to understand, and really much more to the point.
But the book which really closes the understanding gap for me and many others is The Biology of Belief, by Dr. Bruce Lipton.
When I read and re-read Chapter 3 of Dr. Lipton's book, a clear picture emerges which leaves no doubt that the communication described happens all over our physical bodies.
In this chapter Dr. Lipton show his great communication skills by creating the picture of a tiny segment of a cell - a cross section of a cell membrane so thin that it can only be seen with an electron microscope.
His picture consists of a bread and butter sandwich.
Dr. Lipton gets into some terminology which is quite technical, including words which describe the structure of the cell, its membrane and other components, as well as the molecular structure of the membrane itself.
One piece of the technical picture he effectively paints with everyday analogy is integral membrane proteins.
His writing is a pleasure to read, because Dr. Lipton makes it understandable even to non-techies like me.
So when he paints the picture with the sandwich analogy bringing in easy to understand explanations as to how environmental signals outside the cell cause changes in a protein's electrical charge, he's showing us new biological information.
Integral membrane proteins, he says, can be subdivided into two classes - receptor proteins and effector proteins.
Here are his words from page 53:
There are lots of IMPs with lots of different names, but they can be subdivided into two functional classes: receptor proteins and effector proteins. Receptor IMPs are the cell's sense organs, the equivalent of our eyes, ears, nose, taste buds, etc. Receptors function as molecular "nano-antennas" tuned to respond to specific environmental signals.
Skipping some great material which you can read for yourself, he also says near the bottom of the page going over to the top of page 54:
Because receptors can read energy fields, the notion that only physical molecules can impact cell physiology is outmoded. Biological behavior can be controlled by invisible forces, including thought, as well as it can be controlled by physical molecules like penicillin, a fact that provides the scientific under-pinning for pharmaceutical-free energy medicine.
Coupled with surrounding chapters Dr. Lipton shows us how our minds orchestrate an infinite number of communications which assure our ability to experience continuous mind over matter activity, all to our great benefit.
All we need to do is stop putting poisonous junk into our personal inner environments - that is, stop ingesting and injecting chemicals which adversely affect and even destroy the otherwise continuous flow of information to and from every cell of every organ.
